As I write this, actor John Malkovich is on the teeevee doing a Letterman Top List of "Things That Sound Creepy When Said By John Malkovich." It's a dead on category because, if there's one thing I count on in a Malkovich movie, it's that sharp, almost creepy, edge that he brings to his characters.
John Cusack: John is such an unlikely target to be the object of, I don't know...
John Cusack: When John says acting is like a portal to someone else, yes, it's that but it's obviously a portal into yourself.

The villainous heroes are the Marquise De Merteuil (Glenn Close) and the Vicomte De Valmont (John Malkovich), who have cultivated their mutual cynicism into a highly developed and exquisitely mannered form of (in-)human expression.
Malkovitch and Close capture their character's motives to good effect, but acting honour go to Pfeiffer as the innocent victim of the deadly duo's increasingly vitriolic war of nerves, sullied into losing her honour and ultimately dying of neglect after Valmont is forced to drop her like a stone in search of his ultimate prize.
The seemingly villianous characters of the Marquis de Merteuil (Glenn Close) and Vicomte de Valmont (John Malkovich) with their plotting and machinations, are something that only that ghastly age could produce, with social divisons so wide it caused a revolution, as well as its culture of female repression.

Unless you dream of Cameron Diaz as a plain Jane, frizzy haired brunette who is bound, gagged and locked in a cage with a diaper wearing, psychologically damaged chimpanzee named Elijah while her puppeteer husband inhabits John Malkovich's head as said actor has sex with said husband's business partner and lust object.
Problem is, his puppet plays use themes that are classic and very adult and, well, parents are more likely to pop him one in the mouth than put coins in his beggars bucket.

As might be expected from the writer and director of Being John Malkovitch (whose stars cameo in 'real life' situations) this is an astonishingly original script that works on a multitude of levels - even the title itself is open to several degrees of interpretation.
The timeline shifts with great fluidity back and forth through a number of years, and the story is weaved in and out of itself to such a degree of intricacy that eventually truth and fiction are impossible to differentiate.

By the end, "Being John Malkovich" becomes so unhinged that its story loses all shape and direction -- but the tremendous craft and warped sensibility at work are so pleasurable that this really doesn't matter as much as it should.
Except for the memorable scene when the character John Malkovich himself goes inside the head of the famous actor John Malkovich and encounters some kind of endless Malkovichian feedback loop, Jonze's debut feature sticks to a grimy, present-tense mode you might call kitchen-sink surrealism.
Craig is lazy and something of a loser (his erotic street puppetry sometimes gets him beaten up by irate parents), but his belief that he is an undiscovered genius is not treated as ridiculous -- in fact, what we see of his work with puppets is quite affecting.

That's to be expected in a movie that dares to ponder the existential dilemma of a forlorn puppeteer (John Cusack) who discovers a metaphysical portal into the brain of actor John Malkovich.
Malkovich himself is the film's pièce de résistance, playing on his own persona with obvious delight and--when he enters his own brain via the portal--appearing with multiple versions of himself in a tour-de-force use of digital trickery.
