John Masius' Providence, premiering at 8 today on WAGT-TV (Channel 26), is a quirky new series about a plastic surgeon in California who decides to return to her family in Rhode Island after her mother dies at her sister's wedding.
Masius' father was such a man, he said, able to roughhouse on the floor with the family's dog, but unable to tell his son that he loved him.

 Northwest Indiana News: nwitimes.com
A little background: The series' executive producer, John Masius, created and was then ousted from "Touched by An Angel" because CBS thought his vision of the show overly dark.
Death is in the forefront but Masius wants to focus on the show's humor and its capacity to be life-affirming, in a non-saccharine way.
Masius cites the best-selling novel "The Lovely Bones," about a murdered girl observing how her family tries to cope, as one inspiration for his approach to the show.

You also can see Masius' name every week on the opening credits of ''Touched by an Angel.'' He wrote the original script for that show's pilot episode, although he left the project before ''Touched by an Angel'' got on the air.
Devlin and Emmerich (and Fox) are looking to Masius to bring warmth and honest emotions to the show's basic story of a man who suddenly turns up, apparently unaged and with some extraordinary abilities, 50 years after disappearing during an Air Force mission over the Atlantic.
Masius said he likes the idea of working in a genre he's never tried before, science fiction.

Kanakaredes remains just dandy, but creator John Masius seems to have taken some of the criticisms of the show to heart and has made Syd's bakery-owning sister (Paula Cale) and bartender brother (Seth Peterson) less whiny and more cheerful.
Masius has also apparently given Syd's veterinarian dad, played by Mike Farrell, some Visine--the pet doc is much less weepy.
The series is still shamelessly cornball (sister Joanie advertises for a bakery assistant and interviews a mime who silently acts out his answers), but hey, it's never as goofy as Ally McBeal.

 ProvidenceSynopsis
Providence, which first appeared in January 1999, is a family drama series created by John Masius (“Touched by an Angel,” “St. Elsewhere”) and starring Melina Kanakaredes (“15 Minutes”) as an altruistic plastic surgeon who abandons her career specialty and unfulfilling lifestyle to return to her colorful family and hometown in Providence, Rhode Island.
Sydney Hansen (Kanakaredes) entered the field of cosmetic surgery with noble ambitions, but several years of performing collagen lip treatments and nose jobs for celebrities and over-privileged teenagers in Los Angeles began to erode her sense of purpose.
Syd (Melina Kanakaredes) treats a woman (guest star Jana Marie Hupp, NBC's "Ed") whose mother, grandmother and sister have suffered from breast cancer and is considering a radical surgical procedure that may prevent her from contracting the disease.

Few thought Masius' original vision could succeed - not even Reese, who filmed the first, ill-fated pilot with co-star Roma Downey in 1993.

 Touched by an Angel Summary
The series relied on spiritual faith, love, and redemption to send positive messages in an age of dramatic television filled with tremendous violence and negativity.
The three main characters, all angels, include: Tess (Della Reese), the supervisor and mentor; Monica (Roma Downey), the new angel; and Andrew (John Dye), the angel of death.
John Masius's original pilot script was much darker than that which was eventually shown on TV (In the original pilot, Tess was a chain-smoking angel who was frequently at Monica's throat.)
