British blues great John Mayall, who will be in Australia as one of the headliners of the Melbourne International Music & Blues Festival, is well aware that a substantial part of his reputation is based not on his own recordings but on the musicians who have passed through his band.
While Mayall's career stalled in the 70's, it was rejuvenated in the 80's with a Bluesbreakers reunion, albums on major labels and a determination by the blues man to continue to record and tour.
Mayall's best-known song in Australia remains Room To Move, taken from the 1970 album The Turning Point, which was the theme for a much-loved ABC radio program in the 70's.

JOHN MAYALL was born in 1933, in the small town of Macclesfield, England, and grew up amid the turmoil of World War II.
The sole Mayall reference in the Stone piece is the inclusion of the classic 1966 record Bluesbreakers--John Mayall with Eric Clapton, the album that launched Clapton's career yet was great mainly because of Mayall's magnificently soulful feel for the medium and his sly, non- conformist style of blues songwriting.
Case in point: John Mayall--the revered blues innovator and legendary progenitor of the white-boy British blues--whose band, the Bluesbreakers, has at one time or another contained such names as Mick Fleetwood, Mick Taylor, Peter Green, John McVie, Coco Montoya, and Eric Clapton.

John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers are blues legends that have been the cornerstone of British blues since the '60s.
Led by singer/songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist/mouth organist John Mayall, the band have recorded countless albums and played innumerable live shows, with an ever evolving line-up that has included such legends as Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Peter Green, Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor, amongst others.
Mayall also looks bloody good for 70 years of age, especially when you consider the life of most bluesmen and rock and rollers; after all, many fail to reach half that age.

Mayall turned quickly to Peter Green, who managed the difficult feat of stepping into Clapton's shoes and gaining respect as a player of roughly equal imagination and virtuosity, although his style was quite distinctly his own.
Mayall's output has caught some flak from critics for paling next to the real African-American deal, but much of his vintage work -- if weeded out selectively -- is quite strong; especially his legendary 1966 LP with Eric Clapton, which both launched Clapton into stardom and kick-started the blues boom into full gear in England.
