John McAllister Schofield (September 29, 1831 – March 4, 1906) was an (A native or inhabitant of the United States) American soldier who held major commands during the (A war between factions in the same country) Civil War.

In Feb., 1864, he was given command of the Army of the Ohio, which he led in the Atlanta campaign.

October 1864 Schofield was sent to Tennessee to join Major-General G. Thomas in opposing General J. Hood, and on the 3oth of November he fought with General Hood the desperate and indecisive battle of Franklin.
Being ordered to co-operate with Sherman in North Carolina, Schofield moved his corps by rail and sea to Fort Fisher, North Carolina, in seventeen days, occupied Wilmington on the 22nd of February 1865, fought the action at Kinston oi~i the 810th of March, and on the 23rd joined Sherman at Goldsboro.
After the war he was sent on a special diplomatic mission to France, on account of the presence of French troops in Mexico; and from June 1868 to March 1869 he served as secretary of war under President Andrew Johnson, after the retirement of E. M, Stanton (qv.).

 John McAllister Schofield
He was assigned to the 1st regiment of artillery and served m garrison in South Carolina and Florida in 1853-'5, and as assistant professor of natural philosophy at the United States military academy in 1855-'60, being commissioned 1st lieutenant, 31 August, 1855, and captain, 14 May, 1861.
Schofield retreated skillfully before the superior forces of Hood, inflicted a severe check upon him in a sharp battle at Franklin, 30 November, 1864, and joined Thomas at Nashville, 1 December, 1864.
General Schofield succeeded Edwin M. Stanton as secretary of war, 2 June, 1868, and remained in that office until the close of Johnson's administration, and under Grant until 12 March, 1869, when he was appointed major-general in the United States army and ordered to the Department of the Missouri.
