John McCarthy (born September 4, 1927, in Boston, Massachusetts, sometimes known affectionately as Uncle John McCarthy), is a prominent computer scientist who received the Turing Award in 1971 for his major contributions to the field of Artificial Intelligence.
McCarthy invented the Lisp programming language and published its design in Communications of the ACM in 1960.
McCarthy received his B.S. in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1948 and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Princeton University in 1951.

McCarthy was among the first to propose and design time-sharing computer systems, which allow machines to switch their attention back and forth between a large number of tasks.

McCarthy said his father, instead of being a fighter pilot, was in reality a bombardier on a B-17 with the 301st Bomb Wing and 419th Bomb Squadron in World War II and served as a bombardier and central fire controller on a B-29 with the 307th Bomb Group of the 371st Bomb Squadron in Korea.
McCarthy said he knows there are thousands of similar stories, but unfortunately many never have the opportunity or take the time to search out truths that could help them put their lives into focus.
