The idea of a computer or information utility was very popular in the late 1960s, but faded by the mid-1970s as it became clear that the hardware, software and telecommunications technologies of the time were simply not ready.

McCarthy, 'great man' of computer science, wins major award
John McCarthy, professor emeritus of computer science and pioneer in artificial intelligence (AI), received the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science on April 24.
McCarthy was among the first to propose and design time-sharing computer systems, which allow machines to switch their attention back and forth between a large number of tasks.
McCarthy says important policies hinge on the belief that progress is sustainable, such as decisions of whether to conserve resources and whether to help poor countries develop along similar paths as rich ones.

McCarthy believed that the key to AI was being "able to write out the rules that would let a computer think the way we do".
McCarthy left in 1962 to start AI research at Stanford, leaving Minsky to "rule the roost" in AI at MIT for many, many years.

 Transition
Computers in the year 2000, even most existing robots at the time, are usually immobile, unless they are built into a vehicle or carried around.
Some computers perform self-tests or do some internal housekeeping while idling, which reminds us of a cat licking its fur when idle, but such activities have a very low priority and cease as soon as the computer is given a new problem to solve.
Computers or robots will be far superior to humans in a growing range of tasks, yet still far inferior in others, because of the different structure of computer intelligence.
