The fact is that McCusker is really a nobody except to those who knew him, but he is the center of a controversy in death that was started by his friends and family about whether or not a church has the ultimate authority over who is worthy of funeral rites by a particular faith.
McCusker’s death is a tragedy for his friends and family and I’m sure they’re feeling what everyone feels when they experience loss, but their campaign against a church finally standing up for their moral beliefs is misplaced.
McCusker was never an advocate for the Catholic Church when he was alive and he deserves not to be used as a political tool about religion now that he is dead.
