 Discourse: 1. Discourse Analysis
One domain of early work that attracted notice in general and humanistic circles was the cross-cultural study of stories and narratives (e.g., Claude Lévi-Strauss, Anthropologie Structurale [Structural Anthropology]).
Major concerns later on included the discourse of schooling and education (Sinclair and Coulthard, Stubbs, Widdowson) and, with a sociological turn, the organization of conversation (Sacks, Schegloff, and Jefferson).

Story of Discourse Analysis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Large-corpus linguistics, as pioneered by John McHardy Sinclair and his team, exploits the advanced technology of powerful computers with spacious memories to gain ‘access to a quality of evidence that has not been available before’ (Sinclair 1991: 4).
Intriguingly, the Sinclair team, whose ‘functional linguistics’ I cited at the start of Part C, were among the earliest linguists to call their research ‘discourse analysis’ (e.g.
Today, Sinclair compares his computer to the instruments and technologies that enabled swift advances in other sciences, such as the microscopes and particle accelerators I mentioned way back in Part A. Of course, the computer differs by displaying evidence that was easy to observe before, but too plentiful and diverse to manage.

We can immediately grant Sinclair and Brazil’s point that the discourse of schooling is highly structured and clearly disparate from discourses outside the schools.
And the disparity between school discourse and the normal discourse of learners is a major but rarely acknowledged cause of problems and failures (Heath 1982; Philips 1983).

And we can put to the test the ‘post-structuralist’ view of world being continually constituted and reconstituted through discursive practices.
Among the major lessons corpus research has taught us is that language is far more dynamic and inventive than linguists from Saussure to Chomsky ever imagined; and most of this is at a degrees of detail and delicacy where our intuitions about the language are not well-defined (Francis and Sinclair.
So our familiar divisions among the ‘levels’ or ‘components’ of language are not maintained in actual discourse, and we might appreciate why those same linguists saw order in language and disorder in discourse, as I have remarked.
