John B. McKay was one of the first pilots assigned to the X-15 flight research program at NASA's Flight Research Center, Edwards, California.
McKay was with the NACA and NASA from February 8, 1951 until October 5, 1971 and specialized in high-speed flight research programs.
McKay wrote several technical papers, and was a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, as well as the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.

McKay took on the challenge of the expansion Bucs in 1976 after amassing a 127-40-8 record, four national championships and three undefeated seasons from 1960-75 at the University of Southern California.
McKay underwent triple-bypass heart surgery in August 1986 at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif., and a quadruple-bypass in October 1996 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.
McKay is survived by his wife, Corky (the former Nancy Hunter), sons J.K. and Rich, daughters Michele Breese and Terri Florio, and 10 grandchildren.

We went to a funeral today for a friend of ours, John McKay.
From being a strong Christian to having an incredible sense of humor and running his own consulting business, John was a uniquely wonderful man. Rightly or wrongly, I often judge people by their children and while Ross is still just a teen, Paula and John have obviously been ideal parents.
During the services for John, they played a video montage of his life.
