John McMurtry Sr was born in Somerset Co., NJ.
John McMurtry enlisted as early as the summer of 1775 in the First Pennsylvania Regiment, Captain James Chambers Co. By 1779 he had advanced to the rank of Ensign in the same regiment and was sent to Pennsylvania to recruit new soldiers.
John McMurtry (1752-1841), son of James McMurtry and grandson of Thomas McMurtry, the immigrant, was born in Somerset County, NJ.

JOHN MCMURTRY was born 1760 in Craigs Creek Plantation, Agusta County, Virginia, son of Joseph McMurtry, Jr and Susannah Patton and died 1782 in Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee.
John McMurtry's marriage is recorded in the Botetourt County, Virginia marriage records under the date of 28 October 1779, at which time he was not of age, and his father gave his permission by signing the record.
John McMurtry was one of those living in that territory who remained to fight the indians.

McMurtry's essay, "Fascism and Neo-Conservatism: Is There a Difference" from 1983, is also worth reading, with Reagan's neocons continuing today, having only shifted the enemy from communism to Islam (McMurtry is a consistently excellent writer: also see his "Understanding the U.S. War State").
McMurtry's list was reprinted on the usually excellent MAI-NOT forum, a place where I find many good ideas.
It is somewhat ironic as the 'progressive' posters on that forum seem to be having a problem with a poster called "Antifascist Bloc", and have resorted to calling this poster names for having the temerity to challenge their liberal assumptions, proving there are things which are 'unspeakable' on even the most progressive forums.
