John McMillan was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1854 and came to Washington in 1884 when gold was discovered on Ruby creek.
McMillan, tiring of the hardships of the rugged Skagit country, left his Indian family provision for a year after the fever of the gold rush had subsided, and departed to see the cities and towns of Puget sound.
McMillan was one of type, and one of the very few who did so much to open up the country and make it possible for others coming later to get into the most inaccessible forest regions.
