Amazon.ca: Forde Abroad: Books: John Metcalf   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Metcalf is a writer for those who appreciate craft and relish the language, who enjoy forgotten words and deadpan renderings of life's grosser absurdities.
John Metcalf is the son of an English Methodist minister who spent a lifetime preaching the Word; Metcalf himself, in a classic case of generational revolt, shed religious concerns early, yet clearly inherited from his father a passion for the now-secularized, lower-case word.
Still, Metcalf would be right to insist that the true centre of his novella lies elsewhere—in his capacity to convey the totality of Forde's experience, what he sees and feels as well as what he thinks, through the medium of his art.

Review - An Aesthetic Underground by John Metcalf
Metcalf already memorably tussled with badness on that earlier outing, and when he writes in this memoir about his history, it’s often already recorded history: large passages are taken verbatim from his other books.
Perhaps Metcalf’s general stance to Canadian Literature- that its minorness is inexcusable, that it could do better, that inferiority shouldn’t be promoted for the sake of nationalism- is because of a small passage that, for me, serves as the key to understanding his smouldering inferiority complex, the actual inverse of nationalism.
Metcalf has made an important contribution to the literature he has a dual relationship with, one of scorn and love; the words he grooms –his own and those of others- often turn into gold, and that is enough.
