Milton, who, being the last of the four children who made the trip to Texas and having lost his only son in the first World War, was delighted to find himself possessed of an entire new family of considerable proportions.
Though but 5 years old, John, the only one of the children born after the Miltons came to this country from England did his bit toward establishing the new home and the family managed very well, but in the stress of the new life, contact with the other children was lost.

Thus, I agree with John D. Niles that "if this poem can be attributed to a Christian author composing not earlier than the first half of the tenth century…then there is little reason to read it as a survival from the heathen age that came to be marred by monkish interpolations" (137).
Although Milton considered the canonical Bible to be the true Scripture, Virginia Mollenkott believed that the apocrypha, for Milton, provided him with the necessary narrative details to fill in the blanks of the Bible (43).
In addition, Milton uses the name "Ramiel" for one of the fallen angels, and this same angel is named in the Book of Enoch as one of the leaders of the revolt to seduce the daughters of mankind (6.7).

Only one writer since Yoakum has taken note of those favorable comments: John F. O'Shea, trying to counteract the negative portrayal of the Church, exaggerated the favorable comments in his unreliable 1912 essay in The Catholic Encyclopedia.
Other than this essay, treatment of the life of faith in Hispanic communities has been limited to repeating Pike's observation on the "much relaxed" Catholicism in Texas, but misinterpreting it to mean a lax and sinful society.

First printed in 1825, this was the first major description of the South American revolutions to appear in the U.S. It was written by John Milton Niles (1787-1856), a newspaper editor, United States senator for Connecticut, and postmaster general under Van Buren.
This edition of 1838 is the most important, for it includes "a detailed account of the Texian Revolution and War" by L.T. Pease, the father of one of the participants, Gov. E.M. Pease.
Interestingly, though his book contains a positive report on the Texas revolution, Niles angered his fellow Democrats in the senate by refusing to vote immediately for the recognition of Texas.

This account of Mexico is of special interest, because Niles became U.S. Senator from Connecticut, pressing the case in his first term (1835-39) for early recognition of an independent Texas, but subsequently, as an economic protectionist, turned against U.S. ambitions in the Mexican War of 1846-47.
Also shown is Niles’s revised edition (1827), with further comments on the stability of Mexican affairs.
