He is widely credited with modernising trade union and employer relations, initiating partnership agreements as the alternative to adversarial approaches, and with driving forward the TUC as a learning organisation including the establishment of its National Education Centre, the TUC Partnership Institute and the Learning of Young Workers initiative.
John Monks has a degree in Economic History from the University of Nottingham.
