Montagus position was further strengthened in 1705 by the marriage of his son and heir to Mary, daughter of the great duke of Marlborough.
The duke was succeeded by his son John, 2nd duke of Montagu (1689-1749), who in 1745 raised a cavalry regiment known as Montagus Carabineers, which, however, was disbanded after Culloden.
MONTAGU (or MOUNTAGTJE), RICHARD (1577-1641), English divine, was born at Dorney, Buckinghamshire, and educated at Eton and Cambridge.

The constableship was granted as a grand serjeanty with the Earldom of Hereford by the Empress Matilda to Milo de Gloucester, and was carried by his heiress to the Bohuns, Earls of Hereford and Essex.
Through a coheiress of the Bohuns it descended to the Staffords, Dukes of Buckingham ; and on the attainder of Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, in the reign of King Henry VIII it became merged in the crown.
