		Montes Pietatius are charitable institutions of credit that lend money at low rates of interest, or without interest at all, upon the security of objects left in pawn, with a view to protecting persons in want from usurers.
		The establishment and dissemination of montes pietatis is one of the brightest glories of the followers of the "Poverello" of Assisi, for the mons pietatis of Perugia was founded in consequence of the preaching at that city of the Franciscan Michele Carcano of Milan, who inveighed against the usury of the Jews (1641).
		The montes pietatis were either autonomous establishments, or, as at Perugia, municipal corporations; they had a director, called depositarius, an appraiser, a notarius or accountant, salesmen, and other employees; and all were paid either with a fixed salary or with a percentage in the profits of the establishment.

		John died Feb. 14, 1913 and was buried in the Eden Cemetery in Polk County.
		John Mizell Pearce, founder of the Pearce family in the Kissimmee River Valley, was born Nov. 17, 1834, in Columbia County, Florida, the eldest child of Levi and Mary Jane (Hooker) Pearce.
		John M. Pearce also served as Deputy Sheriff for the eastern part of DeSoto County, and was for a number of years the only law enforcement officer in the lower Kissimmee River Valley.

		John Fell was the senior member of the merchant firm of John Fell and Company of New York, which had several armed merchant vessels in overseas commerce as early as 1759.
		John and Susanna Fell lived at what is today Allendale, Bergen County, New Jersey, in a house still standing at 475 Franklin Turnpike (he called his estate here Petersfield).

		The entire brouhaha in the media and Congress over Bolton's "bullying" of intelligence officials stems from his concern that some of Clinton's Intelligence appointees (still in positions of influence), namely Fulton Armstrong and Christian Westermann, were heavily influenced by a Castro spy and were parroting "intelligence estimates" authored by this spy and planted by Castro.
		Montes was arrested by the FBI as a Castro spy and charged with "Conspiracy to Commit Espionage," the same charge against Ethel and Julius Rosenberg and it carried the same potential death sentence.
		A year after her arrest Montes was duly convicted and today, after a plea bargain, she escaped the Rosenberg's fate and serves a 25 year prison sentence.

		Justice Story, speaking for the Court, said that the Negroes were "kidnapped Africans, who by the laws of Spain itself were entitled to their freedom." They were not criminals: the “ultimate right of human beings in extreme cases is…to apply force against ruinous injustice.” The Africans could stay or they could return to Africa.
