Mystery Guide - Rumpole of the Bailey by John Mortimer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
umpole, the fictive alter ego of eminent QC and playwright John Mortimer, is Exhibit A in any attempt to prove that the British legal mystery is far more deeply rooted and interestingly written than the American version.
First time readers are warned it is not a simple one (particularly for Americans), ranging as it does from lawyer's French to the difference between old and new styles of East End slang, with illustrative quotes from Wordsworth to the tabloids.
However, Mortimer miraculously balances these elements to produce something erasing the divisions between comedy and tragedy, the dramatic and the mundane: whether he's gleefully skewering a pompous judge or flatly describing Rumpole's long-vanished hopes for love and understanding, the author's touch is subtle but effective.
