  John Mowlem (1788-1868)
John Mowlem was born in 1788 at Swanage, Dorset, and worked in the stone quarries of the Isle of Purbeck with his father and three brothers.
Mowlem was later heavily involved in replacing these early horse drawn trams with electrified tramways.
John Mowlem himself sadly did not live to see these developments as he died aged 80 in 1868.

As a result Mowlem and Odeon represented a majority in value of the creditors at the meeting and so were able to secure the appointment of the first respondent as liquidator of Craiglair in the face of opposition from the appellants.
Mowlem's debt should have been compensated by the value of the counterclaim and reduced to nil value for the purposes of voting upon the appointment and for the other purposes of the liquidation".

John Mowlem, the construction and services group, came under fire yesterday from trade unions after reporting a 30% increase in interim profits and a record order book thanks to its increasing involvement in the controversial public-private partnership.
Chief executive John Gains argued that both public and private sectors were benefiting from private finance initiatives and other deals.
Mowlem's success, which saw first-half earnings per share rise by 76% at 6.7p, will further fuel calls at the Trades Union Congress conference this weekend for a brake to be put on the government's privatisation drive.

JOHN Gains, chief executive of construction group John Mowlem, expressed his "absolute surprise" yesterday after comments he made in a results statement appeared to spark a 13 per cent plunge in the company’s shares.
Mowlem posted first-half profits up 21 per cent to £15 million for the six months to June, which was firmly in line with City expectations.
In Mowlem’s results statement, Gains said: "Although the outlook for the second half of the year remains uncertain in some markets, we believe we are well positioned to exploit opportunities and expect to make further progress in the second half of 2002 and beyond."

CONSTRUCTION group John Mowlem is planning to float up to 50pc of Access Products & Services, a business which manufactures ladders and scaffolding to sell and hire to the building trade.
Mowlem hopes to press ahead with the flotation next year.
Mowlem also announced interim pre-tax profits of £5.3m, compared to a pre-tax loss of £31.8m in the first half of 1996 when there was a £32m exceptional charge.

Mowlem was born in Swanage of a poor family in 1788, and after starting work as a boy labourer in the local stone quarries he left to work in London as a mason for a sculptor of the time called Westmacott.
George Burt who was Mowlem's nephew as well as his partner for a time, was responsible for the globe, and NOT Mowlem as I state above.

Red tape could be costing companies participating in the the private finance initiative more than £100m a year, construction and services group John Mowlem said yesterday.
While dismissing suggestions that government intervention in Railtrack had damaged enthusiasm for PFI schemes, John Gains, chief executive of Mowlem, said his company was running up costs of £5m-£7m a year preparing for bids that took between 18 months and two years to come to fruition.
Mowlem is involved in £2bn worth of PFI deals including three new contracts for schools in Cornwall and Leeds plus building the £384m Alice Springs to Darwin railway in Australia.
