The John Muir Trail, the John Muir Wilderness, the Muir Woods National Monument, John Muir College (a residential college of the University of California, San Diego), and John Muir Country Park in Dunbar are named in his honour.
Muir was born in the historic royal burgh of Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland to Daniel Muir and Ann Gilrye.

John Muir, father of America's National Parks and founder of the Sierra Club, visited Grandfather Mountain on September 25, 1898.
Muir's visit to Grandfather Mountain was approximately six years after his founding of the Sierra Club in 1892, and five years prior to his historic camping trip in Yosemite with President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903, when together they devised a strategy for Roosevelt's innovative conservation programs.
Then 60 years old, Muir was traveling with his friends, botanist Charles Sprague Sargent and banker/naturalist William M. Canby, whom he persuaded to join him in a climb to the mountain's ridge.

 Christo: The Umbrella Project
He chose two sites to display his umbrellas: an area which is 60 miles north of Los Angeles along Interstate 5 south of Gorman, through the Tejon Pass until Grapevine, and Ibaraki, Japan which is 75 miles north of Tokyo around route 349 and the Sato River.
The Umbrella project took five years of preparations, including securing the necessary permits and performing tests in wind tunnels to make sure they would withstand winds up to 65 mph when open and up to 110 mph when closed.
The California umbrellas were yellow in color and the Japanese umbrellas were blue in color.

Wanda to the park was a 3.3-acre parcel owned by the City of Martinez.  Following passage of the legislation, the city donated the parcel to the National Park Service to be administered as part of the national historic site.
At the time of the transfer, both city and National Park Service staff believed that the 3.3-acre parcel, located between the south side of Franklin Canyon Road and the Santa Fe Railroad line, encompassed all of the land between the street and the railroad line.
