  Hiking the John Muir Trail
The trail descends steeply to Tully Hole, on a fork of Fish Creek, then gently to the head of Cascade Valley, where it crosses Fish Creek on a bridge and ascends another fork of Fish Creek past high rocky Squaw and Chief Lakes to Silver Pass on Silver Divide.
From Mather Pass the JMT descends into the Upper Basin, a broad high basin covered with small streams and ponds, the beginning of the South Fork of King's River, then follows the South Fork until it turns southwest, at which point the trail crosses and begins to climb out of the valley.
The John Muir Trail has a number of places a day's hike from a trailhead making it easy to quit along the way and accommodating those who want to hike a portion of the trail at a time.

If you want to hike all of the dog-allowed parts of the John Muir Trail, you can hike up to Donahue Pass and back (dogs are not allowed north of the crest of the pass).

Muir Trail Ranch is a couple of days south of Vermillion Resort and does hiker resupply.
Muir Trail Ranch is a day or two south of Vermillion Resort and holds food drops, but caters to its guests, not hikers.
If you are a rock climber, there is a mountaineers route (not a trail) that is 3.4 miles to the top, still with the 6000 ft elevation gain, part of it a class 3 climb.

 Hiking the John Muir Trail in California - Southbound
It begins in the Yosemite Valley, follows the spine of the Sierra Nevada south, and ends 212 miles later at the summit of Mount Whitney (14,495'), the highest peak in the continental United States.
On these departures we offer you the opportunity to hike the second, "southbound" part of the trail: from Florence Lake in the John Muir Wilderness to the top of Mount Whitney - a total journey of 146 miles.
Most people tackle the trail with heavily overloaded backpacks; on our trip all you'll need to carry is a daypack, since we provide a string of mules to carry the gear.

John Muir Trail: The Essential Guide to Hiking America's Most Famous Trail (John Muir Trail) by Elizabeth Wenk
Not a problem if you follow his itinerary, but if you're like us (and most of the other JMT hikers) it doesn't help when it's late in the day and you're trying to figure out how much further you need to go to get to a decent campsite.
Bottom line is this is a decent book for planning a 3 week trek on the JMT, but it's not worth the weight to carry it.
