John MURRAY was born on 24 March 1853 at the Greenhill Farm Cottage which overlooks Evan Water three miles north and west of Moffat in Dumfriesshire.
John attended school at the Moffat Academy and enjoyed spinning the tale that he had to walk the three miles in his bare feet, through the snow, etc. During the summers he relished helping with the farm chores and helping his father attend to the sheep.
John easily found work as a shepherd and soon he was the head shepherd at one of the large Canterbury sheep stations in the foothills of the mountains.

Shortly after his return, John MURRAY successfully returned the ancestral estate of Broughton (which apparently had to be sacrificed by his grandfather in order to pay heavy fines levied for supporting the Stuarts during Cromwell's time).
The Murray family was attempting to develop the mine at Strontian and therefore John's frequent travel between the lowlands and throughout the highlands (meeting with Clan Chiefs) was legitimized.
John MURRAY of Broughton died at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire on 6 December 1777 and is buried at the old St. Marylebone Cemetery northwest of London.

John Murray (1741–1815) though sometimes recalled as founder of the Universalist denomination in the United States, might more fairly be described as a pioneer minister and an inspirational figure, as his theological legacy to the later Universalist denomination was minimal.
In 1760 Murray returned to England and joined George Whitefield's congregation; but embracing, somewhat later, the Universalistic teachings of James Relly he was excommunicated.
Murray suffered a debilitating stroke on October 19 1809, which compelled him to give up preaching and died in Boston, Massachusetts on September 3, 1815.
