John Norman, for those who aren't aware of his work, is best known as the author of a series of fantasy novels about the planet Gor, where men are men and women are their sex slaves.

John Norman is one of many pseudonyms used by the famous early 20th century feminist science-fiction writer, "Stormin" Norma Spinrad.
Today, Norman is universally recognised as a major role model for budding feminists and the inventor of irony.
Her intention was to prevent the reader shooting through to the climax of a chapter (where, coincidentally most of the naked women tend to be seen) by preceding it with page after page of semi-documentary prose on (say) the construction of swords or the cooking of porridge.

That one or any or all of these elements were a part of John Norman's inspiration to one degree or another, can be established by the similarities in terminology, philosophies and descriptions found throughout history books and comparing them to the Gor series.
Gor cannot simply be looked at as 'pure invention', as clearly the elements of research and the quest for a world untainted by progress, be it at ecological, social, or gender role level were not just inserted into Gor to add a little color.
Throughout the books, over and over, what John Norman speaks of are ideals and beliefs that, in the civilizing of our world, something was lost, or at least buried deeply enough that it is now difficult to find.

From this hierarchy and his use of evolutionary psychology to analyse gender differences, he then suggests that woman is the submissive natural helper, and figurative slave, of dominant man. His work often, but not always, takes this observation literally: heroes enslave heroines who, upon being enslaved, revel in the discovery of their natural place.
Norman and Goreans have been criticised for this tenet of what they consider honouring nature.
Some enthusiasts believe Imaginative Sex indicates that Norman is not a misogynist but rather a pioneer in human sexual behaviour firmly entrenched in BDSM's fantasy and safe, sane and consensual elements.

Fans of John Norman's novels about the planet Gor create virtual and real-life worlds in which women are slaves.
That of woman is at the foot of man," Tarl Cabot thinks while training his slave girl in "Beasts of Gor." "Beasts" is Book 12 in the venerable and controversial "Gor" series of 25 science fiction novels written by John Norman (the pseudonym of a philosophy professor at a respected university in New York).
The narrative tone is at times hilariously bombastic (think of the portentous voice-over in the movie version of "Conan the Barbarian"), and the story lines, especially in the later installments, are frequently interrupted by long passages of repetitious philosophical blather.
