John Norum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Norum (born on February 23rd, 1964 in Vardø, Norway) is the guitarist in the Swedish hard rock band Europe.
Norum released his first solo album, Total Control in 1987, and would release several studio and live albums throughout the years.
Norum's younger sister, Tone Norum was a popular pop singer in the 1980s and 90s.

www.virtuosityone.com - the website dedicated to rock/metal excellence
In his early days Johns guitar work often saw him labelled as "the more versatile Yngwie" which was selling Norum's playing and writing short as the guy is more along the lines of updated Gary Moore (rock incarnation) with the intensity of John Sykes.
John's solo albums have gone from the overtly commercial debut 'Total Control'; to the awesome riff fuelled yet melodic 'Face The Truth' to the heavy as hell Slipped Into Tomorrow.
Norum's voice here has definitely improved over the years and to be honest suits this material extremely well.

 Scream meets John Norum
It was when John at the last minute filled in for Van Halen at the Karlshamn Rock Festival in southern Sweden that I finally had the chance to talk to him.
John is not like a lot of guitarists in the way that he hasn't got an ego that's way too big, but he's not afraid of admitting that he was a bit bigheaded when he quit EUROPE...
The fact that John left EUROPE at their heights was looked upon as a very strange behavior by a lot of people, but according to John there was a lot of stuff he was dissatisfied with at the time...

MelodicRock.com - Interactive Melodic CD Reviews
John Norum had a shining start with Europe, and at the that time we can perceive that it sounded very similar to John Sykes, Gary Moore and Michael Schenker.
Yes, as with Norum's other recent albums, "Optimus" is a bit on the darker, crunchier side, but not to the sacrifice of melody, which Norum still has a definite ear for.
Bottom Line: "Optimus" is a worthy addition to Norum's solo catalog, and while for some it may not reach the peaks acheived by some of his earlier work, it doesn't drop below the level of quality that one would expect from a performer of Norum's calibre either.

 Interactive Review
John has created a new and more modern sound, one that should and could appeal to a new generation of axe slingers, but has also retained and somewhat returned to the sound that suits him best.
Unbelievable, John Norum is tearing down the walls with fantastic heavy rythmsections, powerfull guitarsolo's and last but not least driving vocals.
John Norum is one hell of a guitar slinger and his own voice propelling his sure fire songs is a winner.

 optimus
John Norum doesn't try to create anything fancy, and is able to keep it simple and still make it very good and not seldom with a driving force like in the tracks Nailed To The Cross and Forced.
A Norum trademark is also a heavy melodic groove as in Takin' The Blame that feels as the most typical Norum track as we are used to know him, containing melodic and heavy blues influenced hard rock at its best.
The band including John's wife Michelle Meldrum did this song co-written by John already back in 1993, and even if it was good then, it is actually better now when done perhaps at it was intended to be done.

Get Ready to ROCK! Review of CD album by John Norum called Optimus
For those who don’t know much about John Norum, he is the guitarist in Europe, has been a member of Dokken and has released a number of solo albums.
Optimus is the first one where John handles the vocals as well as guitars and this makes the lyrics seem more personal.
Overall this is a very good album, fans of the newly reformed Europe, and also of John Norum as a solo artist, should love it.

 Who is John Norum ?
John Norum got his start by playing guitar in a Swed band working with some idiot named Eddie Meduza.
Norum first (?) surfaced with the Swedish band 'Europe' on the album 'The Final Countdown' - an overly commercial effort with far too much emphasis on synths, but he left after disagreements with the bands vocalist Joey Tempest.
Norum seems to be a bit of a Lizzy fan since this album also contains a couple of covers including a version of 'Opium Trail' (apparantly he saw them nine times in Sweden).

But, I came up with a few questions for John, who was one hell of a nice guy, and we had a nice little conversation.
John Norum: And we'll be playing a few of the songs from the upcoming album as well.
John Norum: It's was very easy because I did the tour with Don and, a lot of these songs, I've played them all before.

No Life Til Metal - CD Gallery - John Norum
John Norum is the former Europe guitarist who besides releasing several solo discs, was also the man behind the Don Dokken album before joining Dokken's for a while.
The fact that it wasn't a huge hit for him or for John, just goes to show that there is more to getting airplay than just writing a good song.
I suppose I might have been expecting a bit more shred, due to the fact that this release is on Shrapnel Records and because, well...it's John Norum.

Up until the very late 80s, he was one of the main suspects in provoking the ozone hole and global warming by playing in Europe's most famous hair metal band ever.
Norum left the band at the peak of their success, which up 'til today is still recognised as a sign of integrity, as Europe were becoming more and more commercial.
Not especially the music I listen to in my leisure time, but I admit that this is done with a lot of conviction, enough to convince every survivor from the 80s that this guy was always more than just a pretty hairdo rock star.

PROGRESSIVEWORLD.NET: REVIEWS BY JOHN "BOBO" BOLLENBERG
So knowing John Norum is the main composer within Europe, I was expecting another selection of AOR flavoured material.
Recorded by a trio consisting of John on vocals and guitars, Thomas Torberg on bass and Hux Flux on drums, the endresult is pretty much back-to-basics rock music the way we like 'em best.
With this honest album John proves to be one hell of a solid rocker whether in the guitar department, the vocal section or simply what his composing skills are concerned.

JOHN NORUM, the main songwriter and accomplished guitarist behind the initial success of Swedish superstar outfit EUROPE, inexplicably quit the band on the eve of their chart busting 'Final Countdown' album's release.
The album proved a success with the single 'Let Me Love You' peaking at number 2 in the national Swedish charts as the band went on to support ACE FREHLEY at the ex-KISS guitarist's one-off show in Britain during 1988.
During the early 90s Norum would team up with ex-DOKKEN frontman DON DOKKEN, performing on the American's solo album 'Up From The Ashes' and playing in a touring band that also included former ACCEPT bassist Peter Baltes...

John Norum must get really hacked off with the “ex Europe” tag always attached to his name.
After all, he left in 1986 and put out 7 solo albums before joining in the Europe reunion in 2004.
Old time Norum fans will have to content themselves with the solo lines, which hark back in time to his more melodic material or skip straight to the instrumentals, ‘Optimus’ and ‘Solitude’.

Released a good five years after Swedish guitarist John Norum's debut "Face The Truth", Another Destination is exactly what Norum fans have been clamoring for.
Another Destination, which features the superb, impossibly liquid, six minute instrumental track, "Shimmering Highs" and a pair of evocative insturmentals, "Catalina Sunset" and "Jillanna", was dedicated to guitarist Gary Moore, a hero of Norum.
