Major John Keefer "Jack" Mahony of The Royal Westminster Regiment was awarded the Victoria Cross by His Majesty King George Vl in 1944 for his courage in defense of the Melfa River bridgehead during the Battle of Liri Valley in Italy.
Mahony was born and raised in New Westminster and died in London, Ontario, in 1990.
After the departure of dignitaries, the audience was served to a reception and refreshments in the Armory (which has the distinction of being Canada's only remaining wooden armory), where they viewed Konowal and Mahony displays and the war museum.

In May, 1944, Mahony was tasked with establishing a bridgehead over Italy's Melfa River, which was done under heavy German fire.
The enemy then counterattacked, supported by tanks and self-propelled guns but Mahony's constant encouragement repulsed the Germans, along with another assault while inflicting heavy casualties.
The only survivor on the Walney's bridge and blinded in one eye, Peters was taken prisoner but was soon released by the French; he was carried through the streets where residents hailed his heroism.

John O’Leary considered, when he visited the U.S. in 1859, Doheny, John OMahony and Capt. Michael Corcoran to be the three outstanding men in the Fenian Brotherhood in the U.S. Doheny threw himself heart and soul into the new organisation.
Among those that sat down to form the Fenian Brotherhood were Doheny himself, John OMahony, James Roche, Thomas J. Kelly, Oliver Byrne, Patrick O’Rourke, and Captain Michael Corcoran of the 69th Regiment.
Following the arrest of John Mitchell in May 1848, the Confederation chose an inner council of 21; Doheny was a member of it.

John and Patrick MAHONY were arrested this evening by the police while laying down the Sutter Street Railroad track on Broadway from Front street to the bay.
The jurors - M. SCHAFFER, John WALL, C.E. CAMP and E.M. SMITH - found by their verdict that the deceased was William ROSE, a native of Nova Scotia, aged thirty-three years,and that his death was caused by shooting himself in the head with a pistol.
By unanimous vote of the Board, John OEHNER was granted permission to erect a shed on the east three-quarters of Lot No. 6, in the block between J, K, Ninth and Tenth streets.
