Pastore's election success reflects on the one hand, the talents of an intelligent, friendly personality and the coming of age of Italian Americans in the state -the largest ethnic group in Rhode Island.
John Pastore was also noted for his eloquent oratory, his special talent was to enthuse an audience with stirring flourishes reminiscent of the great speakers in Senate history.

If Pastore and Pell, with all their clout in the Senate, could not wring changes in the plan, all hope would be lost.
Pastore went on to slam the Nixon administration for breaking promises made in pre-election ads to preserve the Rhode Island military installations.
He castigated the Navy, accusing it of "deceit" and "fakery." He recalled that it cost the state $6 million to raise the height of the Newport Bridge, which opened in 1969, at the Navy's request to accommodate the fleet's largest aircraft carriers.

 NucNews - July 17, 2000
John O. Pastore, the first Italian-American to be elected as a governor and sit in the United States Senate, and a dominant figure in Rhode Island politics for three decades, died on Saturday at a nursing home in North Kingstown, R.I. He was 93.
Pastore, who served as governor of Rhode Island from 1945 to 1950 and who never lost an election, entered statewide politics when Italian-Americans were voting in increasingly significant numbers in urban areas and using their growing economic strength to provide financial backing for political candidates they favored.
Pastore was not averse to wagging a finger under another senator's nose, and he impressed his Senate colleagues mightily when he got the better of the bearish senator from Oklahoma, Robert Kerr, a fierce debater, in an encounter on the floor.

Like Senators John O. Pastore and Claiborne Pell, Chafee's legacy is enormous, particularly when one considers the size of the state he represented in Congress.
In addition to offering a voice of reason in what is often a monkey house -- with the simians dressed in red ties, gray suits and fl wingtips -- Chafee was admired for his moderation by fellow pols on both sides of the aisle.

It was the same Frank Licht who upset John Chafee, the three-term governor, in 1968 -- an experience that left his nephew, recently graduated from Harvard, with the belief "that politics is the art of the impossible.
Licht, 52, who amassed a small fortune during his hiatus from politics as managing director of one of the state's largest law firms, Tillinghast, Licht and Semonoff, is nonetheless accustomed to being an underdog, and he imbues his campaign narratives with a mix of unabashed sentimentality and old-school Democratic themes.
