Ostashek's success in the early 1990s was reminding Yukoners that six of the territory's mines had shut down during the NDP's seven years in power.
Ostashek's government record in reducing unemployment by 10 percent to seven (two points lower than the national average) and creating the Yukon as Canada's sole political jurisdiction that could claim debt-free status.
Ostashek, who only spoke Ukrainian until he was 5 years old, plans to keep up the fight and remain in his northern climbs.

 Unexpected defeat for Yukon New Democrats - Territorial Battles: Yukon Elections, 1978-2002 - CBC Archives
Ostashek had worked for the party since it formed in 1978, but had not run for office.
He was the Yukon Party's third leader in a year (Willard Phelps and Chris Young were both dogged by conflict, and stepped down.) And when the party split from the Progressive Conservatives, MLAs Bea Firth and Alan Nordling quit to run as independents.
John Ostashek decided not to use the title of premier that had been adopted by Tony Penikett, reverting to the traditional title of government leader.

Three independents were also elected and Ostashek managed to keep power by winning their support.
Ostashek’s government focused on welfare reform and also signed the land claim agreements that had been negotiated under the previous NDP government.

After establishing Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories, John Bell crossed the mountains into the Yukon River watershed in 1845, and went down the Rat River (today the Bell River) to its confluence with the Porcupine River.
After managing the fur trade at Fort McPherson, he returned to the Bell River, and followed the Porcupine to its juncture with the Yukon River, the eventual site of Fort Yukon.
The conservatives returned to power in 1992 under John Ostashek after having renamed themselves the Yukon Party.

The Tony Penniket NDP government agreed to the principles of the national Endangered Spaces campaign in 1989, which was in turn based on the goal of establishing at least one protected area in each of 23 natural regions in the Yukon.
The 1992 Yukon Party government under John Ostashek made virtually no progress on a protected area policy, although it did sign the Tri-Council Statement of Commitment to complete a network of protected areas (see above).

A few months before the election was called, the Yukon Party had tried to vilify the NDP leader on conflict of interest charges over a property deal made while he was a minister in Tony Penikett's NDP government.
Even though a government-appointed commission of inquiry completely cleared McDonald of any wrong-doing, many Yukon Party politicians, including the government leader John Ostashek, continued to maintain that McDonald had misused his influence, hoping that the implication of wrong-doing would hurt the NDP at the polls.
Piers McDonald replaced Tony Penikett as leader of the Yukon NDP, after the former leader stepped down from territorial politics after the NDP's defeat in the 1992 election.
