John Pemberton was in Virginia prior to, 20 Apr 1688, when he paid to Richard Littlepage, Sr., as executor for the estate of Samuel Osteen (also spelled Ostin or Austin), a sum of 2600 pounds of tobacco and some cash for 184 acres of land located in Pamunkey Neck.
John died prior to 1702 and left a son George for whom Capt. Richard Littlepage purchased land from the estate of one Samuel Osteen (Huston).
From the epitaph of Frances, we know she was born in 1677 and presume John was born about the same year, or a few years previously, and for some reason must not have been baptized at two or three weeks of age as was the custom, or his wife may have been the elder.

 Joel Osteen
To begin with the church was originally started by John Osteen, who was originally a Southern Baptist pastor but after receiving the “baptism” in/with the Holy Spirit he became enamored with the charismatic renewal movement in its early stage and eventually became associated with the Word of Faith (WOF) cult.
One thing is certain in a time of racial division John Osteen opened wide the doors of his church to all people, and all shades and classes of people came.
Osteen I believe is probably the first of many WOF devotee’s who has melded the successful marketing techniques of the seeker-sensitive mega-churches with their positive confession health and wealth message.

 Encyclopedia: Lakewood Church
John Osteen, a former Southern Baptist minister who left the denomination over differences with charismatic and Pentecostal doctrine (Osteen held to these views; the Southern Baptists generally do not), started Lakewood on Mother's Day, 1959 with his wife Dolores ("Dodie") in an abandoned feed store in northeast Houston.
As a charismatic/Pentecostal church, Lakewood is subject to regular criticism regarding its views on faith healing and the prosperity gospel.
Lakewood submitted an offer to lease the facility, and (after criticisms that "church and state should be separate") Lakewood agreed to pay $12.1 million up front for a 30-year lease (the amounts has been reported elsewhere as $11.8 million and $12.8 million), with an option for an additional 30 years at $22.6 million.

The son of a cotton farmer in the East Texas town of Paris, John Osteen wasn’t converted until he was eighteen, not long after he had had the feeling that God was tapping him on the shoulder as he left a Fort Worth nightclub (perhaps for being underage).
Rather than face a showdown with his Baptist brethren, who preferred to keep a tighter rein on the Holy Spirit, John withdrew from their fellowship and, in 1959, founded Lakewood Church in an abandoned feed store in a predominantly black neighborhood on Houston’s northeast side.
