Ostell, John, architect, surveyor (b at London, Eng 7 Aug 1813; d at Montréal 6 Apr 1892).
Ostell's architectural training remains unclear, but soon after he arrived in Montréal in 1834 he received his "brevet de cléricature," having apprenticed to André Trudeau, arpenteur, in order to learn land surveying in Québec (which was different from the British practice).
Ostell established himself professionally and became an active member in the community.

At work professionally by January 1835, Ostell was the city surveyor by the early 1840s and in 1840—41 drew up the first comprehensive city plan of Montreal.
Ostell soon retired from this company, but in 1850 he became a director of the New City Gas Company of Montreal, of which he was president from 1860 to 1865.
Although Ostell was Anglican, the marriage took place in a Catholic church; it was contracted under the joint-estate system common in French Canada, except for debts which remained a separate responsibility as was the rule in British marriages and in marriages involving business people.

British architects such as John Wells (Bank of Montreal, 1848) and John OSTELL (Notre-Dame-de-Grace, 1851) used a neoclassical style in their buildings in Montréal, whereas James O'Donnell and his patrons favoured the neogothic for the Church of NOTRE-DAME (1829) in the same city.
All were precursors of the more important Lucius O'BRIEN, John A. and Allan EDSON, who, like American painters of the same period, favoured a romantic approach to landscape, with richer brushwork and subtler use of colour.
John LYMAN, a great admirer of Morrice, attempted after his return from Europe in the early 1930s to realign the art movement with the école de Paris.
