John Otway: The world is not enough - Independent Online Edition > Profiles
John Otway's curious mixture of wit, poetry and acrobatics was never well-suited to the rigid categorisation that colours the thinking of major British labels.
Otway's attitude to his back catalogue is hardly that of a man who considers his work to be a joke, or can actually be comfortable with certain headlines the red-tops have inflicted on him, notably: "What A Prat I Am".
Otway says he can remember that night because, as Willy drove him back to London afterwards, he put him out of the car at the Northampton turn-off on the M1, and told him to hitch the rest of the way.

  John Otway
John Otway, (born October 8, 1952) is a self-confessed unsuccessful singer songwriter, who built a large cult audience through unrelenting touring, a surreal sense of humour and a winning underdog personality.
The followup singles fared no better despite some imaginative promotion, which included an offer for John to come to a lucky buyer's house and perform the single if their copy was one of the few from which the vocal had been omitted.
By then, Otway had realised he could use his fanbase, who were in on the joke, to engage in minor publicity stunts.
