Between 1835, when his first play was written, and his death he was producing dramatic work.
The writer extols his originality and scholarship: "As an appreciator of others, and as a quick discovered of anything new likely to exercise a future influence on thought he had few equals".
The value of Oxenford's criticism, however, is somewhat lowered by a too great leniency, proceeding from his natural kindliness.

The Welsh words, "Gwyr Harlech", were penned by the 19th-century poet John Hughes, who called himself by the bardic name of Ceiriog (Welsh poets have traditionally adopted a nom-de- plume), after the little valley near the English border where he was born.
The English words to "Men of Harlech" are by the 19th-century English dramatist, critic, translator and song-writer John Oxenford who, among his many endeavours, wrote some 68 plays, translated Goethe and Molière and was an early champion of Schopenhauer's philosophy.
The nationalistic fervour of Oxenford's text - "Men of Harlech, march to glory / Victory is hov'ring o'er ye, / Bright-eyed freedom stands before ye, / Hear ye not her call?" — stir deep passions in the Welsh heart.
