Paterson died at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, Calif., where he had been hospitalized toward the end of a long illness.
Paterson is survived by his wife, Susanna B. Paterson of Greenbrae; son Andrew of Ellicot City, Md.; daughters Annan Paterson of Novato, Calif., Mary Cheadle of Seattle, Wash., Susannah Saunders of San Anselmo, Calif., Caithleen Paterson Zilorus of Putnam Valley, N.Y., and Nora Messinger of Putnam Valley, N.Y.; and by 15 grandchildren.

John Paterson was born in Gore and grew up on a sheep farm at Waikaka, just a few kilometres further north.
Upon his return to New Zealand in 1987, John took up a lecturing position in the Department of Geography at the University of Waikato, later becoming Head of the Social Science Research Programme, responsible for a small unit teaching social research methods to undergraduate and graduate students.
