Peckham's main instrument was a minute system of " visitation," which he used with a frequency hitherto unknown.
The chief authority on Peckham as archbishop of Canterbury is the Registrum fratris Johannis Peckham, edited by C. Trio Martin for the Rolls Series (London, 1882-1885).

Peckham was active in the Rhode Island State Militia, and on June 29, 1823, at the age of twenty-three years, was commissioned captain of the First Company of Militia, of Middletown, and served in that capacity for several years.
Peckham is well known in club and fraternal life in Newport, and is a member of the Miantonomi Club of Newport, of which he was one of the founders.

In 1282 he was employed by the king to make a tour through the counties and boroughs for the purpose of collecting money; this and his other services to Edward were well rewarded, and although not yet ordained priest he held several valuable benefices in the church.
In 1283 he was chosen bishop of Rochester, but owing to the opposition of the archbishop of Canterbury, John Peckham, he did not press his claim to this see.
In 1286, however, two years after he had become treasurer, he was elected bishop of Ely, and he was ordained priest and then consecrated by Peckham.

I did a "google search" on John Peckham and found an item from the Nebraska and Midwest Genealogical Record that says John Peckham (the one who married Mary Clarke) was chaplain to the Earl of Hertford and an acquaintance of Sir Henry Vane, the younger.
That it is likely that this association is what convinced John Peckham to turn his alliance away from the Church of England.
That this John Peckham came to Boston in 1634 with Sir Henry Vane.
