Playford did not write the dances himself and was not a dancing master - indeed there is some suggestion that the dance notations in the book were produced by a group of people.

 Catch that Catch Can
Playford used a number of different layout formats in his catch / song books.  The first edition (Hilton) was printed using a sexto layout in 1652, shifted to an oblong octavo in 1658 and 1663, and settled on the oblong quarto starting with the 1667 edition.
Indeed, while Playford made no specific technological contributions to the music printing scene, (as he himself was not a music printer, only a publisher), he almost single-handedly revived the English music publishing business through many changes to music marketing and selling.
The effect of the decrease of the power of the nobility and the subsequent increase of the power of the middle-class was of great importance to the popularity of John Playford’s publications.  Playford was a master marketer, and knew exactly what his purchasing public wanted.
