Sir John Pringle, FRS (April 10, 1707 - January 18, 1782) was a Scottish physician who has been called the "father of military medicine" (although Ambroise Pare (1510-90) and Jonathan Letterman (1824-72) have also been accorded this sobriquet).
Pringle was the younger son of Sir John Pringle, of Stitchel, Roxburghshire.
Pringle was a regular correspondent and friend of James Burnett, Lord Monboddo, the Scottish philosopher.

This John Pringle of Smailholm and Galashiels fought at Pinkie in 1547, and afterwards, with George Pringle of Torwoodlee and William Pringle of Wolfhousebyre, was surety to the English for 100 gold nobles, the ransom of Hugh Rose of Kilravock, taken in that battle.
John Pringle died in 1650, and his youngest brother, George, having predeceased him, Robert Pringle of Howlatstown, youngest son of Andrew Pringle of Smailholm and Galashiels, and brother of Sir James, became the male representative of the family.
His only son, the Rev. John Pringle, minister of Fogo, described as an elegant scholar, was father of John Pringle of Whytbank, who succeeded his father's cousin in 1695, and died of a fever in 1703, at the age of 25.

PRINGLE, (SIR) JOHN, a distinguished physician and cultivator of science, was born at Stitchel house, in Roxburghshire, April 10, 1707.
He was the youngest son of Sir John Pringle of Stitchel, Bart., by Magdalen Elliot, sister of Sir Gilbert Elliot of Stobs.
Having gained equal favour with the duke of Cumberland, Dr Pringle was, in March, 1745, appointed physician-general to the forces in the Low Countries, and physician to the royal hospitals in the same countries.

As well as practising medicine Pringle was known for his interest in moral philosophy and in 1734 was appointed Professor of Pneumatics and Moral Philosophy.
Pringle was subsequently elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
In 1778 Pringle retired as PRS because of declining health and returned to Edinburgh but, feeling that the city had deteriorated since his youth, returned to London where he died and, like Sydenham, is buried in St James's, Piccadilly.

John and Samuel Pringle lived on the South Branch of the Potomac River in what is now the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia when they enlisted in the army and served in the British Garrison at Fort Pitt during the French and Indian War.
Upon their arrival, John Hacker learned that the land he had chosen (some of the land is included in present-day Heavener Cemetery at Buckhannon) and started to clear was already that of Samuel Pringle.

John Pringle Nichol (1804 – 1859) was a Scottish educator and astronomer who did much to popularise astronomy in a manner that appealed to 19th century tastes.
Born Huntly-Hill, near Brechin, Angus, he was the son of a gentleman farmer and was educated at the local grammar school and than at King's College, Aberdeen.
He was licensed a preacher and soon proved an effective communicator but a change in his theological views led him to abandon the Church for education.
