Two of John's other appearances were at right back and in a 1-0 win at Dover in the Kent Floodlight Cup on 12.4.72 he was said to have given "repeated evidence of his skill" and been "outstanding" again.
During the 72/73 season John continued to be a regular in the reserves and he also made one further first team appearance, playing in a Kent Floodlight Cup tie at Hastings on 15.11.72 that Margate lost 6-0.
John then dropped into local amateur football but rejoined Margate in March 1977 and made 3 first team appearances (1 as sub) before the end of the 76/77 season.

John Barrie (real name Barrie Smith), stood at 6' 2" and was better known for his prowess at billiards.
Having lost to a certain H.J. Pulman, 5-3, in the final of the 1946 English Amateur Championship final, he immediately turned professional (as did Pulman).
He won a further three rounds in the qualifying section, against Eric Newman, John Barrie and Kingsley Kennerley before giving Horace Lindrum a tough ride in their quarter-final, eventually losing 39-34.

One of the essentials that Joe Davis and other top players of his time, Walter Donaldson, John Pulman and Fred Davis, all adopted was to have a straight bridge arm, (Figures 1 & 2).
Even John Parrott's elbow is slightly to the right.
