John Quiggin praises libertarianism « Thoughts on Freedom
“John Quiggin is a Queenslander, an Economist and a prolific blogger”.
Since John Quiggin wishes “to use the power of the state as lightly as possible to achieve policy goals” this seems to be one area where the state acts heavily (as opposed to “lightly”) yet achieves good results for everyone.
Brickbats for John Quiggin for not realising that he is contradicting himself to say he still sees a large role for government in the financing and provision of public goods.

Quiggin studied at the Australian National University, there achieving bachelor's degrees in Arts and Economics in 1978 and 1980 respectively, and further completing a master's degree in Economics in 1984.
Quiggin was awarded his PhD from the University of New England in 1988.
Quiggin authors a popular Australian Centre-Left Blog in his own name, and is a regular contributor to Crooked Timber.

 John Quiggin slimes Windschuttle
Quiggin had the audacity to call Windschuttle a racist because of a book he is about to publish (or has published) on the White Australia policy.
Quiggin's political hatred runs so deep that he also made the bizarre claim that Christian fundamentalists were just as dangerous as those Islamo-Nazis who are responsible for the 9/11 atrocity.
On a final not: Although Quiggin is a professor of economics he appears to have missed the fact that union support for the White Australia Policy was probably motivated by a dim understanding that a rapidly increasing labour supply from Asia would drive down wage rates.

John Quiggin was born c.1801 - a member of a large family with interests in timber yards and rope works in Douglas.
His son John Quiggin entered the business (I have seen one dedication signed John Quiggin, printer, dated 1846) but like his father died at an early age - John II died 27 April 1857 aged 31.
Both John and Mary seemed to be strong Wesleyan Methodists - John was a Local Preacher from 1823 (and possibly before); Mary Quiggin printed the Wesleyan Circuit Plans for many years.

John Quiggin has waded back into the global warming fray with an interesting piece on projected rates of global warming.
John reaches that figure (because his two errors cancel each other out), and agrees that a warming of that magnitude and speed isn't too much to worry about.
As John Quiggin wants to allow an additional 1 degree C on top of the straight-line extrapolation of existing trends, he is by definition assuming that world economic growth will be twice as rapid throughout the 21st century as it has been over the last 26 years.

 John Quiggin - Submissions - Telstra1
As has been argued in more detail by Quiggin (1995) and Brown (1996), the appropriate valuation procedure for a publicly-owned asset such as Telstra is based on the saving in public debt interest represented by the flow of profits of the enterprise.
The analysis presented above, along with analyses of recent privatisations such as that of the Commonwealth Bank (Quiggin 1995) and Commonwealth Serum Laboratories (Hamilton and Quiggin 1995) demonstrates that privatisation is a bad deal for Australian taxpayers.
In the face of such evidence the advocates of privatisation offer nothing more than dogmatic assertions of faith in the market and appeals to fashion, based on the claim that since other countries are privatising, Australia should do likewise.

John Lott has claimed that he conducted a survey over three months in 1997 that found that in 98% of defensive gun uses the defender merely has to brandish the gun to break off an attack.
John Lott’s favourite example of the “Bias Against Guns” is the story of the shootings at the Appalachian School of Law.
Lott performed a superficial analysis of the news stories about the shootings and found that very few of the stories mentioned the fact that two of the students involved in apprehending the killer were armed.

 2003 Fellow: John C. Quiggin
Quiggin's original article on this topic (published in Journal of Economics and Behavioral Organization in 1982) is one of the best-known works in the literature on the representation of choice under uncertainty.
Quiggin's widely-cited work on the valuation of public goods has included both technical contributions aimed at refining the contingent-valuation model and critical assessments of the theoretical underpinnings of the model, focusing on such issues as altruism and interactions within households.
Quiggin has also been an active participant in the Australian public policy debate, publishing reports and submissions to public inquiries on topics including ecological tax reform, the implications of competition policy for regional communities and the agricultural sector, the sustainability of environmental funding, and tariff policy.

I don't agree with John Quiggin or Matthew Yglesias about the standoff in Najaf and on whether continued military pressure is the correct policy to deal with al-Sadr.
My original disagreement with Quiggin's point was simply that I disagreed with his calculus; that, simply, if the measure was the deaths that would be directly caused by a decision we'd never do anything - invading Normandy would have been an impossible decision if this is the formula that ruled the Allies' thinking.
