 Pierce, John Robinson (1910-2002)
A leading applied physicist who is commonly referred to as the father of the communications satellite for his work on it, beginning in 1954 (although the concept had first been suggested by Arthur C. Clarke.
Pierce was employed for 35 years as an engineer at Bell Telephone Laboratories (rising to become executive director of the Research-Communications Principles Division), where he coined the term "transistor," and then at the California Institute of Technology and JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory).
Pierce was among several engineers and scientists who, in the early years of the Space Age, cast doubt on the feasibility of interstellar travel.

Pierce was born on 27 March 1910 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of a traveling salesman.
Pierce and Kompfner, working with other Bell Labs colleagues, developed a tube that amplified microwaves by making the waves slow down enough to be in step with an electron beam, which transferred its energy to the waves.
Pierce supported the idea of launching a 100-foot (30-meter) aluminum-covered balloon to serve as a passive reflector of microwaves from one ground station to the other.

His associates were impressed with the quickness of his mind and the darting, multidirectional thoughts that pinpointed the variety of possible applications that could follow use of a new principle, a new phenomenon, or a new technology.
Pierce has a son, John Jeremy, who is a newspaper man on the East Coast and writes articles on science fiction.

John Robinson Pierce, the father of communications satellites and a writer of science fiction who came to Stanford to pursue his longtime interests in computer music and psychoacoustics, died April 2 at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View.
He was inventor of the Pierce Gun, a vacuum tube that transmits electrons and is used in satellites and, among other things, the klystrons that power the Stanford Linear Accelerator.
"John was part of a tradition trying to understand better the intricacies of the whole chain, and he wrote a lot about it," said Chris Chafe, a professor of music and director of CCRMA.
