But if John Rae and his rising giant of a pianist Brian Kellock are more likely to bring mentions of fish suppers and football into their announcements than the more fastidiously artistic Smith (and scatter a lot more knees-up reels and pipe-like laments around the repertoire) they're a very long distance away from a stereotype.
John Rae's Celtic Feet, by contrast, is the real thing -a rough, tough ensemble of kilt-wearing Scots, who specialise in the fusion of contemporary jazz and their native traditional music.
Rae has been a driving force behind the most progressive developments in Scottish jazz in recent times, yet his sense of his own tradition (Jimmy Shand gets a namecheck on this disc) is as strong as his sense of adventure and the result is a remarkably integrated display of eclecticism, full of surprise and wit.
