Frontline 9 - A reply to John Rees by Murray Smith
John Rees's contribution to the debate over what kind of party socialists should be building today deals with fundamental issues.(1) It is very welcome, as is the reproduction in ISJ of the two articles from Frontline by Nick McKerrell and myself.
John Rees is obliged to recognise that "the SSP has of course taken very similar positions to the SWP on both these issues (the war and the BNP) and a host of other critical questions.
Running through the positions of John Rees and Alex Callinicos is the idea that there is a norm for a revolutionary party, represented by existing far left organisations and in particular the SWP and that all other parties are to be judged by how far they correspond to this norm.

Frontline 13 – Respect – an opportunity and a challenge for the left in England
John Molyneux of the SWP is right to say that Respect is being built on “principles that unambiguously divide it from the leaders of social democracy in Britain, but also internationally” (7).
John Rees gets to the heart of the matter when he points out that the questions that are raised by broad movements “can only be answered by political organisations that are more precise and defined than the movement as a whole”.

Review of John Rees on Kronstadt in Defending October
The evidence Rees musters for this point is a useful indication of the general Leninist method when it comes to the Russian revolution.
Rees handy 'editing' of this quote transforms it from one showing that three months before the rising that Kronstadt had retained its revolutionary spirt to one implying the garrison had indeed been replaced.
Rees also attempts blame the decline in the number of Bolshevik party members in Kronstadt to the Civil war but in fact the fall in numbers in 1920 was due to purges and resignations from the party.

The Observer | Comment | The Observer Profile: Sir Martin Rees
Thus this grey-maned, hunched figure of Martin John Rees - he has suffered from curvature of the spine since adolescence - will join Isaac Newton, Humphry Davy, and Ernest Rutherford as head of the Royal Society, a post that is not without hazards, as many of Rees's predecessors have discovered.
The only son of two Shropshire teachers, Rees had a relatively happy youth in which he revealed little interest in scientific matters and in the end only chose to pursue mathematics because the alternative - languages - were a lost cause to him.
Rees fully endorses his recent predecessors' interventionist stand and is clearly bursting to have a punch-up - alright, a rigorous debate - over a number of issues, in particular the question of UK energy generation.
