Hopes of saving albatross now rest with UN Sailor and albatross campaigner John Ridgway, who spent a 327-day voyage hunting pirate boats in the Southern Ocean, presented a 105,000-name petition to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in support of the worldwide save the albatross campaign.
Joined by the RSPB's Dr Euan Dunn, John Ridgway spoke at the FAO meeting, calling on all countries to follow the example of Chile, which has 100% satellite coverage of its offshore fleet and a national action plan for tackling pirate fishing.
John was clear and straightforward: 'I recommend you borrow the national action plan of Chile, shut yourselves up in a room for 24 hours, and finish your own plan.

 Roof raised for Ridgway's return
London's Tower Bridge was raised twice this morning for sailor John Ridgway, as he finished his year-long voyage around the world's oceans to highlight the needless slaughter of albatrosses and other seabirds by pirate longline fishermen.

Sixty-six year old John, from Ardmore, north-west Scotland, left London in July accompanied by his wife Marie-Christine and a handful of volunteers.
