John Rodgers, born in Maryland in 1773, entered the United States Navy in 1798 as a lieutenant.
Rodgers continued with his duties on the mainland, and in the summer of 1814, he contributed to the defense of the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. areas by dispatching several corps of sailors for the defense of the capital.
Rodgers was soon taken prisoner by the French, and in June 1802 he wrote a lengthy letter to Secretary of State James Madison concerning the terrible treatment he received in their custody.
