Ruiz is also widely disliked, by boxing experts and fans, for his “jab-and-grab” style, which he began after being knocked out in 19 seconds by David Tua on March 15, 1996.
Ruiz fought former champion Holyfield to fill the vacancy on August 12, 2000, losing by unanimous decision (this result made Holyfield the first to win a world heavyweight title on four separate occasions).
Ruiz, whom Tua had just beaten — but as the #5 contender, was the highest-ranked fighter still interested — agreed to fight Rahman, a former WBC / IBF world heavyweight champion who had won and lost those belts to Lennox Lewis (by KO) in 2001.

Ruiz didn’t beat Evander two of three times…I think it was about 1.5 times, tops, considering that Holyfield may have dropped him hard in that second fight with a body shot that Joe Cortez ruled a foul, but might have been legal.
The reason Ruiz clinches so much is all in his head (fight inside and make it ugly and rough) after the Tua fight this set in as Ruiz`s envy to be a tough inside guy, he can’t destroy people on the inside so this is the best he can do.
Ruiz complained loudly that he was not allowed to fight his fight, as he is against everyone else I've seen him in with.

Realizing that Ruiz owed a mandatory defense, Team Ruiz had inquired about the WBA's mandatory contender, and its official ruling for Toney was dated January 20, 2005.
Ruiz' promoter, Don King Productions, was ordered by the WBA to commence negotiations with Toney's promoter, Goosen Tutor, in order to reach an agreement to stage the bout.
