John Ryan was born in 1823 at Kilkenny.
Private Ryan, in conjunction with another private (Peter McManus of the 5th Regiment)dashed into the street and took a wounded captain out of a dhooly and carried him into the house in spite of heavy fire in which the captain was again wounded.
John Smith in born on in July 1822 at London, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Secundra Bagh, Lucknow on the 16th of November 1857 during the Indian rebellion and was the only member of the regiment to be awarded the VC under Rule 13 of the Royal Warrant (being elected by the regiment).

John Ryan (1823 - 4 March 1858) was born in Kilkenny and was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 26 September 1857 at Lucknow, India, a party of men was shut up and besieged in a house in the city.

 Grieve VC
The WW1 VC, awarded to former Wesley student Robert Grieve and 37th Battalion soldier, was handed over from the College keepers of the medal, to Trust personnel from the Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne.
Capt Robert Grieve, the great nephew of SM John Grieve, also a VC recipient in the 1854 Crimean War, was awarded the VC for outstanding bravery during the Battle of Messines in Belgium.
Upon his death in 1957, the VC was bequeathed to Wesley College in 1959 and put on display in the War Memorial library, located within the College, until fire completely destroyed the library in 1989.

John Winton adds a note of interest in his book, "Victoria Cross at Sea," it says that McKENZIE was one of 'St Mark's Little Army.' This referred to the members of that parish, in London, and who went off to fight in 1914-18.
Along with Private John Ryan, of the 1st Madras Fusiliers**, Private McManus rushed into the street, took Captain Arnold from the dhooly and took him back to the House, all the time under heavy fire, from which Captain Arnold was wounded again.
John Milbanke was Educated at Castlemount in Devon and at Harrow before joining the 10th Hussars on the 26th November 1892.

Edward St John Daniel was born at the family home 1 Windsor Terrace, Clifton, Bristol on 17th January 1837, the first child of a well-known Bristol attorney, Edward Daniel.
In 1860, at the age of 23, Edward St John Daniel was clearly a naval officer of outstanding prospects.
My interest in Edward St John Daniel was sparked when I discovered that if the story of my ancestor were true, that ancestor would have to be Daniel, who had indeed won the VC at the Battle of Inkerman.
