John Ryan was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 7 September 1863 near Cameron Town, New Zealand, Lance-Corporal Ryan, with two privates, removed the body of a captain from the field of action after he had been mortally wounded and remained with it all night in the bush, surrounded by the enemy.
Lance-Corporal Ryan was drowned in December of the same year, while trying to rescue a comrade.

Miles RYAN - European Bengal Fusiliers (later Royal Munster Fusiliers) - On the 14th September 1857 with the troops ready at the Kabul Gate of Delhi in India, reserve ammunition was being carried to the ramparts for storage in a magazine.
Ryan’s VC was promulgated in the London Gazette of the 24th December 1858.
He is acknowledged to be one of the two youngest winners of the VC (aged 15 years, 3 months) and is buried at Co Westmeath, Ireland.

Captain of the Afterguard JAMES GORMAN VC was born in Islington, Middlesex, on 21st August 1834, his parents Patrick James Gorman a Nurseryman and his wife Ann (nee Furlong) had been married at St Martins in the Field Church, Westminster on the 23rd of November 1829.
On Monday 1st April 1878, James Gorman VC was promoted to the position of Second Mate with a salary of 130 Pounds ($260) per year, he retained this position as third officer of the NSS Vernon until the 7th June 1881.
Sergeant John Park VC and Private Alexander Wright VC, of the 77th Regiment of the British Army, were in fact the first recipients of the Victoria Cross to set foot in Australia, they arrived in mid 1857.

Private Ryan along with a Private McManus (reg No. 806), of the 5th Regiment, dashed into the street, brought Captain Arnold from a dhooly* and took him into the house, all the time under heavy fire which caused Captain Arnold to be wounded again.
On the 7th September, 1863, Lance-Corporal Ryan, along with Privates Bulford and Talbot, all three of the 65th Regiment, went and removed the body of the late Captain Smith, from the field of action, after he had been mortally wounded, and afterwards remaining with it all night in a bush, being surrounded by the enemy.
