John Ryan was an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British British and Commonwealth forces.
On 30 September 1918 at the Hindenberg Defences, France, when the enemy succeeded in establishing a bombing party in the rear of the battalion's recently-won position, Private Ryan, on his own initiative, organized and led a party of men with bombs and bayonets against the enemy.
Private Ryan cleared the last of them alone, finally falling wounded himself.

Pte Ryan was awarded the Victoria Cross for "most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty" on 30 September 1918 in France.
During an attack Pte Ryan dashed forward and was one of the first to reach the enemy trenches, helping to overcome and occupy the trench.
As the enemy counter attacked with a bombing party, Pte Ryan organised and led the men near him to attack the enemy party killing three Germans, he then rushed the remainder of the enemy on his own, being wounded as he drove the enemy back across No Man's Land.

John Ryan was born at Tumut (NSW) in February 1890.
John Carroll was born at Brisbane (Queensland) on August 15 1892, but migrated to Western Australia as a young man. He worked as a labourer in the goldfield town of Kalgoorlie, and nearby Karrawang, until his enlistment on April 27 1916.
During the VC Centenary celebrations in London in 1956 he was chosen to broadcast to Australia from the dinner given by the Lord Mayor.

Henry 'Harry' Dalziel VC., was born at a small mining camp near Irvinebank, Far North Queensland on 18th February 1893, the son of James and Eliza Maggie (nee McMillan) Dalziel.
In 1933 Dalziel joined the Citizen Military Forces 9th/15th Battalion as a Sergeant, he was the first VC to be a member of the Guard of Honour at the opening of the Queensland Parliament as a member of the King's Colour escort.
His medals, which are greatly sought by American collectors due to his VC being awarded for his actions on their Independence Day, are in the family’s bank vault.

In May 1918 he scored no less than 24 victories and on one occasion in July whilst leading an attack on a formation of Fokker aircraft, he shot down one and sent another crashing to earth and was the cause of another pair colliding.
On 2 September 1918 at Arras, France, when the right flank of the battalion was held up, Lance-Corporal Metcalf rushed forward under intense machine-gun fire to a passing tank and with his signal flag walked in front of the tank directing it along the trench in a perfect hail of bullets and bombs.
John Milbanke was Educated at Castlemount in Devon and at Harrow before joining the 10th Hussars on the 26th November 1892.

Private Ryan along with a Private McManus (reg No. 806), of the 5th Regiment, dashed into the street, brought Captain Arnold from a dhooly* and took him into the house, all the time under heavy fire which caused Captain Arnold to be wounded again.
On the 7th September, 1863, Lance-Corporal Ryan, along with Privates Bulford and Talbot, all three of the 65th Regiment, went and removed the body of the late Captain Smith, from the field of action, after he had been mortally wounded, and afterwards remaining with it all night in a bush, being surrounded by the enemy.
