John Rylands, son of Joseph Rylands and Elizabeth Pilkington, whose nephew Richard founded the glass-making company, was born in St Helens in 1801, became Manchester’s most successful cotton magnate and one of the wealthiest ‘self-made’ Englishmen of his day.
Mrs Rylands always intended that everyone in Manchester and beyond should be able to appreciate the architectural glories of her memorial to her husband, and exhibition cases were installed to give the public the opportunity to view some of the Library’s treasures.

The library, part of Manchester University, has been awarded '8.19m by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and a bid has been made for a further '3m to the European Regional Development Fund.
It is hoped the improvements will triple the number of visitors to the library - claimed to be in the world's top 10 - bolstering the figure to over 100,000 a year.
A major portion of the cash will be used to replace the library's flat roof with a pitched one, completing architect Basil Champney's design for the building, which opened on New Year's Day, 1900.

Given that we normally make chairs either singly or as a batch of six to acompany a dining table and that much of our work is carried out by hand, this represented quite a substantial order for our company.
The John Rylands library is scheduled for completion by Autumn 2006 so these chairs can be seen upon opening.
