 John Rylands Library - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1972, it merged with the library of the Victoria University of Manchester to form the John Rylands University Library of Manchester.
The library was founded by Mrs Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her late husband, John Rylands.
Mrs Rylands had originally intended the library as a principally theological collection and the building, a very fine example of Victorian Gothic, has much of the appearance of a church.

The magnificent Rylands Library on Deansgate opened its doors specially on Sunday June 9th for a conference on Jewish Heritage at the Rylands.
The special collections of the John Rylands University Library of Manchester, housed in the magnificent neo-gothic Deansgate building constructed in the 1890s, are rich in material relating to Jewish studies.
In 1901, Mrs Enriqueta Rylands purchased from the Earl of Crawford a large collection of manuscripts dating from the 21st BC onwards, which include some of the most spectacular medieval manuscripts ever produced.

Notes: This project brings together a variety of original manuscript sources from the John Rylands University Library of Manchester, dominated by the Gazette Manuscript, a manuscript newsletter documenting the period 1775-1793.
These manuscript sources provide unique evidence on commerce, politics, and society in France, particularly during the years 1775-1793, but also stretching back as far as the reign of Louis XIV with fragments from the Melanges Litteraires dating from 1682, when the court moved to Versailles and the sudden death of Colbert in 1683.

Building on an existing contract for the John Rylands University Library of Manchester (JRULM) to provide operational and advisory services to postgraduate centre librarians and doctors in training in the NHS, the NoWNET project was launched in 1997 to provide access to a range of databases licensed to the JRULM.
Particular attention was focussed on Silver Platter EMBASE to improve and encourage access by all NHS staff in addition to University staff and students at sixteen selected clinical sites.
Evaluation of the project has shown increased and more effective use of EMBASE and other resources, a greater number of connections to the service and improved access in general for University staff and students working at remote clinical sites.
