 Into Troubled Missouri
When John Tanner and the Bolton party arrived in Kirtland, Ohio, in mid-January of 1835, there was some question in their minds as to whether they should remain in Kirtland or proceed on to Missouri.
While John Tanner had not been born with a silver spoon in his mouth and was used to making his way in life, this was an entirely new experience and must have hurt deeply.
John Tanner had brought with him most of the proceeds from the sale of his large holdings in New York, and his arrival in Kirtland could not have been more opportune.

John Tanner (c1802) and Susannah Stroud and Rachel Potts of Burke, MCDowell and Macon Co, NC and Union and Towns Co, GA
John Tanner was born ca 1801/1802 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina (per 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census).
I believe that John Tanner is a son of a Joseph Tanner who was in Burke County, North Carolina from ca 1800 to the 1820's, but I have yet to prove that Joseph is Johns father.
That is likely where she and John married, so that makes it the logical place to look for John Tanners ancestry, and Joseph Tanner was the only Tanner in that area, so that makes him the logical candidate to be Johns father.
