John Stith Pemberton was born in Knoxville, Georgia in 1833.
Dr. Pemberton died in Atlanta on August 16, 1888 at the age of fifty-five and it was reported all the drugstores in Atlanta were closed during the funeral.

Pemberton served with distinction as a lieutenant colonel in the Third Georgia Cavalry Battalion during the Civil War (1861-65) and was almost killed in the fighting at Columbus in April 1865.
Pemberton was "the most noted physician Atlanta ever had," according to the Atlanta newspapers, but he is best known for his expertise in the laboratory, where he perfected the formula for Coca-Cola.
It is the most excellent of all tonics, assisting digestion, imparting energy to the organs of respiration, and strengthening the muscular and nervous systems." He explained that South American Indians considered the coca plant a sacred herb and praised its beneficial effects on the mind and body.

John C. Pemberton was born to an old and influential Quaker family in Philadelphia in 1814 and graduated from West Point in 1837 at the age of 23.
Pemberton, because of his Northern origins, was critized and even accused of treason by many in the South for the loss of Vicksburg and the capture of 29,000 Rebel soldiers.
When Pemberton was finally exchanged in May 1864, he was no longer accepted by the soldiers or the people of the South, and no assignment could be found for his high rank.

Convinced as he was of the virtues of the coca leaf, and kola nut, Pemberton focused his efforts towards a "temperance" drink based on these ingredients and the essential oils they contained.
He pressured Pemberton to engage in lavish advertising promotions, issuing free drink coupons and plastering Atlanta with oil-cloth banners and streetcar signs to promote the brand.
Ironically, Pemberton then sold the rights to the Coca-Cola formula--he'd developed cancer and his morphine addiction had likely become very serious--but in 1887, he sold Willis Venable and George Lowndes two-thirds of the rights to the formula.

This is based on some of Pemberton's writings that indicate some coca plants were too bitter (that was because of cocaine).
This was because the reason for using kola nuts was for their caffeine content, and Pemberton almost positively bought his "Citrate Caffein" from a company that derived their caffeine from kola nuts.
Pendergrast knew that "Celery Cola" was the recipe Pemberton was working on at the time of his death, and he was also aware of the story of Pemberton's apprentice and an old formulary book.
