I started reading John Sandford's Lucas Davenport nee "Prey" novels right at the get-go, but stopped after the first three when it seemed as if Davenport was beginning to slide off the rails.
John Sandford gets multiple kudos here for creating an engrossing mystery in the police procedural vein, while at the same time never losing sight of the fact that he has a strong, complex central character with Lucas Davenport.
Sandford very subtly maintains the all-so-difficult balance, intertwining Davenport into the complex mix and moving him right along with it.

Sandford's novels routinely top national bestseller lists in both hardcover and paperback, and all remain in print after more than a decade.
Sandford cut his teeth as a general-assignment reporter, working crime stories for such newspapers as the Miami Herald (where he befriended bestselling writers Carl Hiaasen and Edna Buchanan) and the St. Paul Pioneer-Press.
It's no wonder Sandford opens "Mortal Prey" with Davenport enjoying the rising framework of his new house (as he has opened previous novels with Davenport building sheds or shingling roofs), setting the stage for his continuing combat between order and chaos.

John Sandford (a pseudonym for John Camp) has a couple of series that he writes about.
Lucas's personality is the novel's most nuanced: he is a rugged lover of women--including his old friend Elle, psychologist and Sister of Mercy--he fathers his live-in girlfriend's baby and spends nights inventing board games.
Michael Bekker, a pathologist fixed on his own beauty, various high-powered drugs and hatred of his wife, also is obsessed with the eyes of the dead and dying.
